DEPARTMENT OF SUMEROLOGY
Department of Sumerology is a philology branch within Ancient Languages and Cultures Department of Ankara University Faculty of Languages, History and Geography. Department of Sumerology carries out studies on cultures and languages of communities, which lived in Anatolia and Mesopotamia regions between ±3300-0 BC. The department also researches main subjects such as primarily invention of cuneiform, changes in cuneiform in different stages and communities which used cuneiform. Babylonian and Assyrian dialects of Acadian, which is a Semitic language, is also studied besides Sumerian Language. Detailed researches are carried out by using original documents on Ancient Assyrian cuneiform and language, which was used in Assyrian Trade Colonies Period when writing was introduced to Anatolia. Objective of the sub-department is training researchers, who know target languages, in order to explain ancient history of Anatolia.
