Department of Polish Language and Culture, an academic outcome of diplomatic relations between Poland and Turkey, of which 600th anniversary was celebrated in 2014, was opened as part of Department of Western Languages and Literatures under directorship of Prof. Dr. O. Aydın Süer in 1986. The primary objective of the department is to teach Polish Language, which is a Western Slavic language with Latin alphabet, provide language skills and introduce culture and history of Poland.

Our department continued its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes under this name at the end of 2013-2014 academic year. Sub-department of Polish Language and Culture is a sub-department of Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, which was established with Council of Higher Education institution’s decree dated 13.05.2014. The objective of our department, which has continued education since 2014-2015 academic year fall semester, is training individuals who will transfer relations between Poland and Turkey to future generations.

Our department is the single programme in Turkey with undergraduate and postgraduate programme which is of high academic importance. Phonetics, grammar, speaking, translation, history of culture and literature subjects are offered in four year-license programme whilst translation, history of literature and history lessons are provided for postgraduate students.

Undergraduate Programme

Students acquire listening, understanding, speaking and writing skills with phonetics and speaking lessons, which are given by Polish academician/s during the first year of undergraduate programme whilst grammar and applied language courses are provided in order to enhance their grammar.

Grammar, translation and culture history subjects, which are taught in the second year, provide a basis for history of literature and translation lessons in 3rd and 4th year.
