DEPARTMENT OF WESTERN LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES

Western Languages and Literatures education began with German Language and Literature, French Language and Literature, Hungarology and English Language and Literature departments as part of Faculty of Languages, History and Geography, which was founded with a special law in 1935. Department of American Culture and Literature was opened in 1957; Department of Italian Language and Literature in 1960 and Department of Spanish Language and Literature in 1975.

Department of Western Languages and Literatures, which was founded in accordance with Article 13 of Academic Organization Regulation for Universities, which was issued on January 18th, 1982 after enactment of No 2547 Law of Higher Education in 1981, continues education with 12 Departments and 1 Science Department. German Language and Literature, American Culture and Literature, Bulgarian Language and Literature, Modern Greek Language and Literature, French Language and Literature, Dutch Language and Literature, Hungarology, English Language and Literature, Spanish Language and Literature, Italian Language and Literature, Romanian Language and Literature (as a discipline), Polish Language and Literature, Russian Language and Literature.

The department, which has tried to fulfill its mission to become a culture and science gate to the West since its foundation, provided a significant contribution to train several valuable people who are beneficial to society. Most of the academicians, who have worked in related departments of other universities in Turkey, were graduated from department of Western Languages and Literatures.

Department of Western Languages and Literatures, which has the richest traditions in its equivalent in Republic Period, preserves its brand value with undergraduate and postgraduate programmes besides several academic studies.
