DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE
Our department is the first higher education department, which offered undergraduate program in this field, following Department of English Language and Literature. Our Department began training in 1936 as part of Faculty of Languages, History and Geography and trained the first academicians in this field. Primary objective of our department is training specialized graduates in English Literature field, which is privileged amongst world literatures besides fulfilling the need for personnel who are able to speak foreign languages for different sectors in Turkey.
Students, who are admitted to the Department of English Language and Literature, are required to take the English exam to be exempted from the preparatory year, which is provided by School of Foreign Languages. In the first year of undergraduate study, a great importance is assigned to English language training. In the second year, the courses are centered on 18th century poems, novels and prose. In the third and fourth years, the courses respectively focus on 19th and 20th century literatures. The programme also includes translation and composition courses in order to enhance students writing and translation skills in English. The students are also offered courses such as Ancient Literature, Mythology and Latin as part of Europe Union Socrates-Erasmus Higher Education Programme. Our faculty provides a programme for “English Teaching Certificate” for third and fourth year students upon their wish. The students are required to prepare undergraduate thesis as a special study in order to carry out a research and study on a certain subject. Graduates can work for universities, primary and secondary schools besides public and private institutions and media companies.
